FRAGMENTS is a collaboration between sound artist, Corey Fuller, visual artist Synichi Yamamoto, and calligrapher Mariko Kinoshita. Created for Shinjuku Creator’s Festa, an annual art festival taking place over two months in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan, FRAGMENTS is based around the text from Hōjōki. Written in 1212, the work depicts the Buddhist concept of impermanence (mujō) through the description of various disasters such as earthquakes, famine, whirlwinds, and conflagration that befall the people of the capital city Kyoto. The opening sentence of Hōjōki is famous in Japanese literature as an expression of mujō, the transience of things and is the text around which FRAGMENTS is based:

Ceaselessly the rivers’ waters flow, and yet the waters never remain the same.
The foam that floats upon stagnant pools, now vanishing, now forming,
never remains the same for long.
So, too, it is with people and all that dwell in this world.

Calligrapher, Kinoshita, calligraphed this text, which was then deconstructed, cut-up, rearranged, and processed into video by Yamamoto. Fuller recorded Kinoshita reciting the text and used her voice as source material to create the composition and sound design for FRAGMENTS.

At first, FRAGMENTS showed at the Shinjuku Creator’s Festa on four outdoor jumbotrons in Shinjuku. Later a version of the immersive installation was commissioned by and developed for Haneda Airport as part of the Japan Media Arts Distributed Museum organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan as an ongoing collaborative project that continues to grow.

「ゆく河の流れは絶えずして、しかももとの水にあらず。よどみに浮ぶうたかたは、かつ消えかつ 結びて、久しくとゞまりたるためしなし。
世中(よのなか)にある人と栖(すみか)と、又かくのごとし・・・」
書家 木下真理子氏が選んで揮毫した鴨長明の『方丈記』の一節を、木下氏自身が正方形のピースに書を分断。
その分断されたセルをもとに、映像作家の山本信一が時間軸を与え、さらに音楽家 Corey Fuller氏が『方丈記』の言葉を分解・再構築したサウンドによって構成された映像作品。
映像制作の方法では、山本がしばしば用いる方法で、分断された文字をランダムに時間をずらしながら配置する仕組み(方程式)をつくり、そこへセルの素材を代入していき、得られる予期せぬ偶発的なパターンにインスパイアされ、再びそれらをフィードバックしたり、コマ単位で編集したりして時間軸を与えています。
今回は音楽の手法でも、ピアノなどの楽器の他に、木下氏が『方丈記』を朗読している素材をレコーディングして、分解し、音源として使用するという試みをしています。
木下氏が書の活動でコンセプトにしている空や縁起の感覚、Corey Fuller氏が取り組んでいるアンビエントの織りなす豊かな静寂、山本信一が作品で目指している風景を眺めるときのメタ的な視点、それぞれのアーティストのもつ世界観を『方丈記』を交点にしてコラボレーション。
常に“うつりかわるもの“を眺めながらも感じる”普遍的なもの“がテーマになっています。
新宿クリエイターズ・フェスタで、新宿の4つの屋外ビジョンで展開された後、文化庁『メディア芸術×文化資源 分散型ミュージアム』の一環で、イマーシブインスタレーションのバージョンを羽田空港で展開するなど、継続的なコラボレーションプロジェクトとして発展しています。
